I bought plezWife a black Lexus RX-330 a few years ago to replace her fading Mazda that we'd had for close to 10 years. The driver's side sun visor had three little buttons with the HomeLink logo above them. I never took the time to program it because the existing remote was working fine and we didn't get the RX-330 user manual when we purchased the car from the Lexus dealership.
Well, after 8 years of being pressed by my wife's well-manicured and quite healthy fingernails, the poor Genie remote button began to fall apart; it got so bad that my wife had to start operating the remote with the end of a ball point pen!
After one short trip in her car, plezWorld decided to get rid of the Genie remote and program the HomeLink button.
After Googling Genie, Genie Pro, HomeLink, and every permutation that I could think of and reading the innumerable horror stories about programming the HomeLink buttons, I decided to put some easy instructions on here to save some time if you need to program yours.
It was quite easy and I programmed the HomeLink buttons in less than 15 minutes... print and follow these simple instructions:
Train the HomeLink button
- Disengage the garage door opener from the garage door so the garage door isn't constantly going up and down during the training process. There is usually a red cord hanging near the garage door, just pull it down to disengage.
- For first time training, press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons located on the sun visor or your overhead.
- Hold the buttons for about 20 seconds until the HomeLink indicator light begins to flash.
- Position the Genie remote (hand-held transmitter) 1-3 inches away from the HomeLink buttons, while keeping the HomeLink indicator light in view.
- Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold both the desired HomeLink button and Genie remote button until the HomeLink indicator light flashes slowly and then rapidly.
- When the indicator light flashes rapidly, release both buttons. The rapid flashing indicates successful training.
- Press and hold the trained HomeLink button and observe the indicator light.
- If the HomeLink indicator light is solid/continuous, training is complete and your device should activate when the HomeLink button is pressed and released. (STOP HERE)
- For Genie Pro users, the HomeLink indicator light will blinks rapidly for 2 seconds and then turn a solid/continuous light. This indicates that HomeLink is trained for the rolling code (Intellicode) that is used in your Genie Pro garage door opener.
Link HomeLink to Genie Pro garage door opener- On the Genie Pro, the "learn" button is under the light cover on the motorhead unit just above the hanging antenna wire. You'll need a Phillips head screw driver to remove the screws and access the "learn" button. Since my wife's car has a sunroof, I just opened it and accessed it from there. If you're not as tall as me, you will probably want to use a step ladder to access it.
- This next step requires you to press the "learn" button on the garage door opener motorhead unit and the HomeLink button within 30 seconds of each other. You may need another person to help you with this final step.
- Press and release the “learn” button. NOTE: Once the button is pressed, there are 30 seconds in which to initiate the next step.
- Return to the vehicle and firmly press and hold the trained HomeLink button for two seconds and release.
- Repeat the “press/hold/release” sequence 3 times to complete the link process.
- After the third time, the HomeLink button should operate the garage door motor.
Finishing Up- Reattach the light cover to the motorhead unit and put away the screwdriver.
- Re-engage the garage door to the garage door opener by pulling the red cord away from the garage door.
- Put the garage door opener remote in a safe place, you'll need it when you get a new car.
plez sez: i hope this helps... instructions like this would've saved me the two hours it took to do this for my wife's car. these instructions should work for all HomeLink units, but may vary slightly by manufacturer of garage door opener and remote.
Thanks for the tips plez! Garage door remotes can be tricky.
ReplyDeleteU're a good husband;-). U got any friends? LOL! I just came by to say Hey, since it's been a minute!
ReplyDeletehey there, CAP... long time!
ReplyDeleteyeah, i gotta few friends, but i'll be honest with you, the good ones are already taken! *smile*
and as for the not-so-good ones... well, as the saying goes, "you're better off on your own!"
thanks for stopping by... you were definitely missed!
Okay, so I printed out these instructions the other day, and hooked it right on up this morning. I couldn't figure out how to disengage the garage, so it kept going up and down, but now my little buttons on my visor work.
ReplyDeleteHow cool is that...I've had that clip on thing on my visor for ever. Now there is no need for it anymore. YIPPIE!!!
way to go, fergie... now make sure that you put the garage door remote in a safe place where you can remember to find it when your husband buys you a BRAND NEW CAR!!! *smile*
ReplyDeleteDo I have to use the progam button on the motor if my opener is NOT Genie Pro?
ReplyDeletecarol,
ReplyDeletei only own a Genie Pro, so i really cannot speak on another type of garage door opener... but i'm willing to bet that your garage door opener is very similar to the Genie Pro and you'll have to use the program button on that one as well. your best bet would be to go to that manufacturer's website for instructions.
Thanks plez, was continually pressing those infernal homelink buttons to no avail until I saw your post. Piece of cake to do with the right instructions. BTW, the Genie pro's learn button is not marked on my unit but it is the only button there so I pushed it and it worked. Thanks again.
ReplyDeletemichael,
ReplyDeletei've had this blog for alittle over 2 years... and this post is my favorite one! thanks for dropping by and glad that it helped. take care.
Genie are excellent Garage doors
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this. For the longest time it escaped me that you have to program HomeLink with both the Genie remote control AND the "learn" button the the garage door itself. I don't understand how so many Owner's Manuals fail to convey this.
ReplyDeleteYou rock. Made it easy!
ReplyDeleteGlad I could be a help. I originally posted this almost 2 years ago and people are still finding it helpful.
ReplyDeleteYour post looks very interesting. I really liked to read your article. Thanks for sharing such nice post related to Garage Doors ...
ReplyDeleteThe only *really* clear set of instructions for this that I've found. My car's owner manual obliquely referred to needing to do both steps but was very unclear. Thank you so much for figuring it out and writing it down for us all. By the way, when I googled Genie homelink programming your blog was about the third or fourth hit!
ReplyDeletePlez!! Good looking out bruh!! I just read your instructions on the Genie Pro and the Homelink. My wife has had the Homelink for almost two years and we have never been able to program it.......that is, until I read your post. After reading it I was able to not only program her Homelink, but I also programmed another remote that we had, giving us three openers just in case one gets lost....which they are proned to do from time to time.....especially when kids get their hands on them. Anyway, I greatly appreciate the post! You saved me lots of time....which equates to lots of money, 'cause 'Time is Money'. Thanks, again, and I'll Hollatchalata!!
ReplyDeleteYou are the best, I was following my car's manual and it did not work, I followed your instruction and boomm!!! it is working perfectly, Thanks a lot and whish you the best.

Thanks for your help sir. You are a scholar and a gentleman. Of course as a typical man, I did not read the instructions in its entirety and therefore was not successful. Your blog helped a lot. Only thing I would like to mention and maybe it was in your blog and I missed it was in order for the programming to take place, some vehicles need to be on. Thanks again. Doc Banks.

The garage door is usually the largest moving object in a home. The technology utilized by many manufacturers is the same utilized before the advent of the garage door opener. There are a number of entrapment points, including gaps between section joints where a finger can easily be lacerated or severed when put in the opening. Homeowners use electronic devices to operate their garage door.
