A Quarter of Teenage Girls Have an STD

The first national study of four common sexually transmitted diseases (STD) among girls and young women has found that one in four are infected with at least one of the diseases. The New York Times goes on to state that the number is closer to 50 percent of Black girls aged 14 to 19 years who have at least one of the diseases monitored in the study - human papillomavirus (HPV), chlamydia, genital herpes, and trichomoniasis, a common parasite.

The two most common STDs among all study participants were HPV and chlamydia. Most of the girls would show very few symptoms of any of the diseases which increases the likelihood of continued transmission.

There are treatments for all of the diseases and the disease agency recommends the HPV vaccination for all women ages 11 to 26. The use of latex condoms is highly effective at preventing infection by chlamydia, trichomoniasis, HIV, gonorrhea, and hepatitis B. Condoms are less effective against genital herpes, syphilis, and HPV.

plez sez: this was a very disturbing article in light of the fact that i have a young daughter. it appears that our society has become more permissive of the sexualization of our children at younger and younger ages. my daughter is only six years old, so imagine the shock when she came home from school one day and said that another little girl in her class said that my daughter was gay! we had her look up the word "gay" in her children's dictionary... one crisis averted, but how long will we be able to beat back the constant barrage of sexual content that is directed at children at such a young age? how can we protect her innocence until she makes it to her teenage years?

this feeds directly into my revulsion at hearing so many girls (and yes, teenagers are girls) are infected with sexually transmitted diseases! there has to be an equal number of boys (yes, teenagers are boys) who are infected, as well. some would say that i was a late bloomer, sexually, but even when i got started (in college), i always had condoms or made sure that my girlfriend was on "the pill". and back then, i only "messed" around with women who had the potential to eventually become my wife.

and it is no surprise that the Black community carries the biggest share of the infection rate (50 percent)! with single parent households in the Black community hovering around 70 percent, little boys and little girls are doubtlessly witnessing their mothers with a number of male sexual partners without the benefit of marriage or commitment... it is quite likely that each sibling can have a different faceless father! it is no wonder that they have carte blanche to practice unsafe sexual behaviors with numerous partners without any thought to commitment or monogamy. little boys see these men come and go as they please, using their mothers as little more than sexual hookups. little girls model their behavior on the transient and seemingly slut-like actions of their mothers. i grew up with a loving respect for Black women, because my father always provided for our family and always respected my mother!

i contend that we are watching (yes... the Revolution is being televised) the unraveling of our moral and social fabric. we can no longer tell our little girls that it is shameful to be sexually active with little boys... i guess there's a coolness factor in being a whore (well, that's what we called girls who screwed around when i was a child). and even though it was every boys dream to "get some", it was the morals of my society that said that it was wrong to "knock up" a girl or for a girl to get "knocked up". remember how outraged we were the Genarlow Wilson had gone to jail for having sex with a 15 year old girl? remember that Genarlow Wilson was one of four boys who had had sex with this girl on the same night. remember the outrage at him receiving a ten year sentence for having consensual sex with a 15 year old? as if a 15 year old girl can consent to having sex (oral and vaginal) with four teenage boys! i would bet that at least four of those participants have an STD.

the sad truth is that "abstinence education" will not work in a society that glorifies the sexualization of its children. britney spears's pregnant 16-year old sister (Jamie Lynn) had a show on the Disney channel... they're not making new shows, but "Zoey 101" has plenty of re-runs... imagine the horror of catching my daughter seeing that! when we go to the grocery store, they have "Zoey" on the cover of all of the checkout lane mags talking about her pregnancy. the most popular song of the summer was by some geeky looking teenager, rapping about "superman dat ho'"... i don't allow my daughter to do the superman dance nor listen to that insipid song! and the list goes on and on...

it is time for the entertainment industry to own up to the fact that whether they like it or not, they set the tenor of the norms in our society (would we be as repulsed today by the scene in "Peyton Place" when the audience finds out that Selena killed her stepfather because he was raping her? i think not!). let's have more "Hanna Montana" and less "Madonna"!

Debra LaFave is Still a Child Molester

CNN reports that Debra Lafave, the former Florida middle school teacher convicted of committing numerous sex acts with a student, was arrested Tuesday for "inappropriate but non-sexual contact" with a teenage coworker.

Debra Lafave was arrested after talking with a female teenager. The association violated the terms of Lafave's probation, which forbade her to have contact with anyone under 18, the sheriff's office said.

plez sez: i opined on this whole sordid mess with this woman last year (read it). her behavior and her subsequent release with a slap on the wrist turned my stomach back then... and this violation of the terms of her probation only goes to reinforce my thoughts that her "pretty" ass should been sent to jail for molesting that middle school student.

i have no doubt had she been "ugly" or Black, they would've found a jail cell for at least a couple of months. since ms. lafave is above the law, she feels no enmity about breaking the terms of her probation... and of course, this violation will not send her to jail, either.

don't you just love america's justice system?!?

Genarlow Wilson Released from Prison

BREAKING NEWS: On October 26, 2007, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Georgia Supreme Court had ordered his release, calling his 10-year prison sentence "cruel and unusual punishment" under the Georgia state and federal constitutions.

Over four months after a judge ordered that Genarlow Wilson be freed from prison, where he had spent more than two years for receiving consensual oral sex from a 15-year-old girl when he was 17, the Georgia Supreme Court finally gets him out of prison.

all along i have contended that i did not like the law with which he convicted; it was a miscarriage of justice to charge this boy with such a heinous crime. the punishment seemed to far exceed the crime and this poor boy lost over 2 years of his life for nothing.

i now hope that Genarlow can work to get his life back on track (he was planning to attend college when he was convicted), i pray that his family can heal the wounds of this horrible ordeal, and i hope the next time that i see this young man's name in the news, that the news will be GOOD NEWS!

WTF? - Contraceptives in Middle School

Yes, the title of this post is correct. The health center in King Middle School in Portland, Maine can now dispense birth control pills to girls... without parental consent!

On October 17, 2007, the Portland School Committee in Portland, Maine voted to allow the health center at the King Middle School in Portland, Maine, to offer birth control prescriptions to its students, who range in age from 10 to 15.

Excerpts from the ABC News report follows:

The Portland School Committee voted 7 to 2 last night to allow the health center at the King Middle School in Portland, Maine, to offer birth control prescriptions to its students, who range in age from 10 to 15. Dr. Pat Patterson, the medical director of School-Based Health Services in Portland said she was "thrilled" with the vote.

Proponents of the proposal tacked up black-and-white posters of a baby, contrasting the cost of raising a child with the cost of birth control, while several opponents bowed their heads in prayer. National and local media jostled for positions at the front of the room.

Mary Ibrahim, another Portland resident, said that just because kids may be having sex doesn't mean they should be having sex. And offering birth control services is a form of encouragement. "Let's be leaders. Let's be parents. Let's be grownups," said Ibrahim.

Amanda Rowe, the head nurse in Portland's school health centers, emphasized that students must have a signed parental permission slip to use the student health center. Although, by state law, if a student requests confidentiality, health care workers must honor it. Meaning birth control pills could be prescribed without a parent knowing.

Rowe said that patients fill out an 18-point health history form and risk questionnaire. If a student indicates that they are having sexual relations, the "discussion begins and includes a strong counseling component" said Rowe.

Overall, over the past four years, there were a total of 17 pregnancies at Portland's three middle schools. And that's why the caregivers felt so strongly that offering birth control prescriptions would fill a desperate need. "Many parents are not being honest with themselves. They just don't realize the extent of risky behaviors these kids are engaged in," said Amanda Rowe.

WTF?!?

maybe i'm just stuck in the 70's, but since when has schools been in the business of "planned parenting"?!? i believe that sex ed should be part of the school curriculum, but i am four square against this asinine reasoning for providing 12-, 13-, and 14-year old girls with birth control pills. if the school finds out that little mary jane is playing hide the ding-dong with the little boys at her school, she shouldn't be given a month's supply of contraceptives and sent back to the boys' locker room... i would think that little mary jane's parents (or legal guardian) should be notified and sexual education counseling would be necessary for the entire family.

by allowing youngsters to circumvent the authority of their parents and exercising "their privacy rights" without parental consent is WRONG! this practice shouldn't be done in high schools and it damn well shouldn't be done in middle schools. who would expect a 13-year old girl with the hots for some horny jock on the football team to make a reasonable and level-headed decision about whether to engage in sexual intercourse with that boy? much less decide whether or not she should be popping birth control pills so that she doesn't get pregnant... UGH! this story has made me ill.

if the parents have to be notified if the school nurse gives your child an aspirin, they surely should notify the parents if they are dispensing hormone-altering drugs! this is flat out wrong and those board members who voted for this provision should be removed from office.

and with the free pills, these kids will now think they have free reign to be sexually active and promiscuous... i have no doubt that the rate of STD's will climb dramatically in this community.

The Republican Senator who reportedly "came on" to prospective pledges of his fraternity while he was in college, "diddled" at least one Congressional Page in the early 80's, performed fellatio on a man in a men's restroom in Union Station in Washington, DC in 2004, and made lewd sexual advances to a male undercover cop in a men's restroom in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport in June 2007 (for which he pleaded guilty and paid a $575 fine) actually had the audacity to impugn the integrity of Bill Clinton back in 1999!

As for his profuse denials about his sexuality today and in 1982, I will paraphrase from Shakespeare's "Hamlet": "The [gentleman] doth protest too much, methinks."

WTF - Girl's Momma Defends Genarlow Wilson

OK, we're all in agreement... the 10 year sentence for Genarlow Wilson because of his New Year's Eve indiscretion (receiving oral sex from a 15-year-old) was too harsh. Even Thurbert Baker (the Georgia Attorney General who filed an appeal that is keeping Genarlow Wilson in jail pending the outcome of the appeal) says that the sentence was too harsh!

But now I read in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the mother of the young lady who performed "lip service" on the night in question has gone public saying that the sentence was too harsh. She regrets that she didn't get the prosecutors to drop the charges.

The tape shows Wilson having intercourse with a 17-year-old. Both appear intoxicated in the video. Wilson was charged with raping the 17-year-old but was acquitted.

In another part of the video, Wilson is lying on his back in one of the motel room beds and receiving oral sex from Cannon's daughter. Wilson does not appear to be forcing the girl in the video. [Ms.] Cannon said her daughter told her the sex was consensual.

Veda Cannon, 39, of Douglasville, GA said the sex between her daughter, Wilson and four other teens was consensual and regrets she didn't ask prosecutors not to charge them. What mother, no, what parent in their right mind would condone their daughter having an oral sex train being run on them? What the f**k is going on with these people! Now I'm thinking: the girl's mother is the one who should be in jail.

Her 15-year-old daughter had FIVE funky, drunk boys run their nasty little dicks up in her daughter's mouth and she doesn't think that's criminal? She's quoted as saying, "She did not want any of this to happen. She was friends with all of them."

Word to the mother: friends don't let friends skeet in their friend's mouth!

But I guess that's why she was a 37-year-old grandmother; her daughter (who is now an 18-year-old girl) is the unmarried mother of a 2-year-old son! Count 'em... that's 3 generations of one family that's shot to HELL!

War in Iraq - Unintended Consequences

The New York Times reports that there has been a huge increase in prostitution by Iraqi women in Syria, as a result of the war. As more men are killed or kidnapped, the women flee the dangers of Iraq and head to neighboring Syria. Once there, the only industry that is open to many of them is the "world's oldest profession." There are reports of entire families of women who take turns working in the sex trade and then dividing the money with their families and children.

The New york Times article continues:

Mouna Asaad, a Syrian women’s rights lawyer, said the government had been blindsided by the scale of the arriving Iraqi refugee population. Syria does not require visas for citizens of Arab countries, and its government had pledged to assist needy Iraqis. But this country of 19 million was ill equipped to cope with the sudden arrival of hundreds of thousands of them, Ms. Asaad said.

“Sometimes you see whole families living this way, the girls pimped by the mother or aunt,” she said. “But prostitution isn’t the only problem. Our schools are overcrowded, and the prices of services, food and transportation have all risen. We don’t have the proper infrastructure to deal with this. We don’t have shelters or health centers that these women can go to. And because of the situation in Iraq, Syria is careful not to deport these women.”

plez sez: this story tugged at my heartstrings. as much as the Bush Administration likes to wallow in its own propaganda, ain't it funny that we almost never have any good news coming out of Iraq? other than the occasional "insurgent" that gets killed, all the news we hear is about how the government there is not working, how the Iraqis are not taking control of the government, how unsafe it is in Iraq for our troops and the Iraqis, etc. i am almost numbed to the horrors and despair that visits itself upon these people on a daily basis.

and why? why are the people who live in Iraq so miserable? i believe the Iraqis are miserable because of this illegal and immoral war waged by George Bush. instead of continuing to prop up his war machine by voting him billions more tax dollars, the democrats should've been drafting impeachment papers. if Clinton's little white lie about his "indiscretion" with Lewinsky was an impeachable offense, then invading a sovereign nation for the expressed intent of avenging the Bush Family Honor must certainly rise to that standard! am i the only one who feels this way?
